National Trust Activities

A selection of National Trust activities being run in and around the North Devon area. A great idea for a day out during your holiday with us. Also don’t forget all the activities run at David Kennard’s Borough Farm near Morthoe famous for the Mist Sheepdog Tales television series.

Arlington Court

Family Ranger Days – Mon 28, Wed 30 Mar, Mon 4, Wed 6 April, 11am-3pm. Join the rangers on a fun day in the outdoors for families. Learn about the work they do and pick up some skills, such as shelter building, cooking on a fire and more. £1

Family Garden Fun – Thu 31 Mar, 1.30-3pm. Join a gardener to learn how they care for the gardens and create something special to take home for colourful garden palettes to seeds to grow.

Spring Lamb Talks – Fri 25 Mar – Fri 8 April, 3-3.30pm. Meet a new flock of spring lambs and enjoy a talk by a local farmer, find out more about rearing sheep and how they help the Arlington estate thrive.

Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt – Fri 25 – Mon 28 Mar, 11am-4pm. Enjoy a Cadbury sponsored hunt with a Cadbury chocolate Egghead. Follow clues around the grounds and find the answers to claim your prize. Hunt £2.50

Daffodil Trail – Tue 29 Mar – Sun 10 Apr, 10.3am0-5pm. Take part in the daffodil trail through the grounds. Follow the clues to find locations of riddles and learn more about these golden hued plants. Collect all the correct answers to claim your prize. Trail £1.

Meet the Gardener: A seasonal garden tour – Wed 6 Apr, Wed 4 May 2-3pm. Join one of the Arlington gardeners for a look at the plant highlights for this month from the Victorian garden, kitchen garden and pleasure grounds.

May Fair Sun 29 & Mon 30 May, 11am-4pm. Come and celebrate all that’s fantastic about rural crafts and country skills. See local craftspeople demonstrating their work and buy hand made items. Plus join in with the community craft to make something magical.

North Devon Coast and Countryside

Family  dry stone walling – Thu 7 Apr, 11am-3pm. The NT needs your help – bring the family and learn how to rebuild an ancient dry stone wall. Many of the walls around Mortehoe are over 200 years old and constantly need repairing.

Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt at Baggy Point –  Sat 26 – Sun 27 Mar, 10am – 4pm. Follow the Easter Trail, picking up clues to claim your Cadbury chocolate Egghead. There’s also a trail in the walled garden of Sandleigh cafe for young children. £2.50 per trail.

Bucks Mills Cabin open day with the Burton Art Gallery – Sun 3 Apr, 10am-3pm. Join everyone at the Bucks Mills Cabin to explore and see inside the cabin, left completely untouched since the 1970’s.

Dawn chorus walk –  Sun 1 May, 5-8am. An early morning walk from Mortehoe to listen to the woodland birds waking up. Join Ranger, Jonathan Fairhurst on this stunning dawn walk from Mortehoe out to Bull Point lighthouse. Booking Essential 01598 763402. £5.

Wild Camping for Wimps – Sat 7 – Sun 8 May, 3pm-11am. A fun family evening under the Heddon Valley dark skies learning new and useful skills. You will be cooking on an open fire. The evening will include storytelling, foraging and food tasting with a wild food expert. Booking essential. Adult £10, child £5.

Coastal family trail from Baggy Point – Sat 28 May – Sun 5 June, 9am-4pm. Collect a trail map from the Baggy Point car park kiosk and head off seeking hand crafted objects, tucked away under gorse or standing solitary on the cliff tops. Trail £1.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – Sat 21 Nov – Wed 23 Dec, Sun 27 Dec – Sun 3 Jan, 11am – 4pm. Live the magic of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe through sparkling displays around the house. Wrap up warm, explore the outdoor festive family trail and spot willow reindeer under twinkling lights.

Dine Out Christmas Specials Wed 2, 9, 16 Dec, 6.30-10pm. Join the staff after hours to enjoy a festive home-cooked, locally sourced meal in the atmospheric restaurant. Ingredients are sourced from Killerton estate and local producers where possible. Booking Exxential 01392 881345.

Harp Concert – Thu 3 Dec, 10 Dec. 7  -10.30. Enjoy an evening of musical entertainment by Elizabeth Jane Baldry in the historic Music Room. Tuck into a delicious three course, home cooked supper. Booking essential 01392 881345. £32 per person.

Late Night Opening – Fri & Sat, 4 & 5, 11 & 12, 18 & 19 Dec, 4-6pm. Find your way through the darkness guided by the stars, moon and sparkling fairy lights. Expolre the outdoor trail and marvel at the house inspired by The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Knightshayes by night – Fri 11 – Sun 13 Dec, Fri 18 – Sun 20 Dec, 5 – 8pm. The house and part of the garden will be illuminated – bringing festive cheer to long dark evenings. The house and gardens will be decorated for a traditional Victorian Christmas and each room will tell a different story.

Father Christmas – Fri 11 – Sun13, Fri 18 – Sun 20, Wed 23 Dec, times on website. Visit Father Christmas and do some craft with one of his elves in his busy workshop.
